Jin Kim is serving his 24th season as Music Director & Conductor of the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. Under Kim’s leadership, Atlantic Symphony has been transformed into one of the premier professional orchestras in Greater Boston and New England.
Music critics of leading newspapers, including The Boston Globe and the The Patriot Ledger, consistently praise the orchestra’s performances as “spectacular, dramatic, expressive, confident and unified.”
During Kim’s tenure the Atlantic Symphony has solidified its mission, expanded its repertoire and continues to garner enthusiastic support from Boston’s South Shore community and beyond.
Kim has appeared with orchestras in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia including the National Arts Center (Ottawa), Plzen Philharmonic (Czech) and Korean Symphony orchestras. Since 2001 he has also been a regular guest conductor of the Bucheon Philharmonic, one of the leading professional orchestras in Korea. In addition to his work with Maestro Leonard Slatkin and National Symphony Orchestra at the National Conducting Institute in Washington D.C., at the invitation of Maestro David Zinman, Kim also served as a Conducting Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival.
Kim is a recipient of the prestigious Robert Shaw Conducting Fellowship, an annual career development award presented to one North American conductor, underwritten by the National Endowment for the Arts. Equally accomplished in the choral-orchestral genre, Kim is a founding Music Director of Magnum Chorum and received first prize at the 1995 American Choral Directors Association’s National Conducting Competition. As a pianist, Kim was a finalist at the Minnesota Orchestra Concerto Competition and he continues to be an active chamber musician. Also an accomplished professional singer, he was a member of the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus, Minnesota Opera Chorus and The Dale Warland Singers – one of the most distinguished professional choruses in the United States.

This gentleman made his dreams come true. He will present his fascinating story and lessons learned from his experiences on Sunday, September 2 at 10 a.m. in the Old Ship Meeting House, 107 Main St, Hingham.

Yeo-Jin Kim
Born in 1991 in Seoul, Korea, Yeo-Jin Kim began her musical studies in the fields of music theory and composition. In 2014 she received her Bachelor’s degree in composition at Ewha Womans University under Prof. Ji-Hyun Kim but developed a passion for orchestral conducting under the guidance of Prof. Hyun-Gil Shin and Radu Popa.
Yeo-Jin then moved to Vienna for her piano studies as a pupil of Prof. Stephan Möller at the Prayner Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Arts. The same year, she was accepted to the orchestral conducting program at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW), where, two years later, she completed her first diploma degree under Prof. Simeon Pironkoff. In the summer of 2019 she had her Master’s graduation concert at Musikverein Wien with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Yeo-Jin’s passion and ability in conducting is evidenced in her proactivity. In fact, she made her conducting debut in January 2013 with the Timisoara Banatul State Philharmonic Orchestra in Timisoara, Romania, even before the start of her orchestral conducting studies at MDW. Her successful performance granted her the privilege to lead the orchestra once again in her hometown Seoul later that year. She has since maintained an active conducting schedule, notably performing with the Oltenia State Philharmonic Orchestra in 2015 at the Korea Kulturhaus Wien, and with the Polish Baltic F. Chopin Philharmonic in 2018 in Gdansk, Poland. Furthermore, in the same year she was invited to the special concert Une Nuit Mythique pour le Centenaire de Claude Debussy in which she conducted “Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune” with Chamber Ensemble in the Belvedere castle in Vienna.
Yeo-Jin digested an especially active schedule in 2019, during which, in addition to her Master’s graduation concert, she conducted in two concerts in the Verginia Zeani Festival (Reghin, Romania) with the Virginia Zeani Orchestra and one in Musikverein Wien with Ensemble Kontrapunkte. In tandem, Yeo-Jin has regularly participated in masterclasses where she has learned from prominent teachers including Christoph Rehli, Colin Metters, Marc Albrecht, Uros Lajovic, Marin Alsop, Andres Orozco-Estrada and Jorma Panula. In addition, she worked as a musical supervisor and guest conductor for recording sessions in Synchron Stage Studio in Vienna.
Recently, Yeo-Jin had received an invitation for audition from the Wiener Symphoniker for the position of assistant conductor under Maestro Orozco Estrada. She has received positive results from the audition and is expected to take up the position in October 2020.
While working as a assistant conductor, She assist not only for Wiener Symphoniker in Vienna, but also several Summer Festivals in 2021 which is styriarte Festival in Graz and Bregenz festival in Bregenz Austria with her Chef Maestro Andres Orozco Estrada.
Yeo-Jin completed one additional Master’s degree programs with distiction at MDW: choir conducting under Thomas Lang and Alois Glasner. She is a choir member of Cappella Albertina and Wiener Singakademie and also serves as Kapellmeister at Pfarrkirche Maria Enzersdorf-Südstadt.

The Korean violinist and conductor, Jin Kim, started playing the violin at the age of 7, and studied with Hae-Yup Yang until graduated Seoul National University, School of Music. She came to America to pursue further study in violin performance under the renowned violinist Ruggiero Ricci at the University of Michigan. She holds master’s degrees in both violin performance and ensemble. While pursuing doctoral studies, she became very interested in performance practice in the music of 17th and 18th century, which led her to Europe to study authentic performance of Baroque period. Among many renowned Baroque violinists she encountered with, Sigiswald Kuijken was the one who deeply influenced her playing Baroque violin and she studied with him during from 1987 to 1993. She was awarded “Honorable Mention” at the Brugge Early-music competition (1990), 2nd prize (with no first) at the Yamanashi early-music competition (1992), and awarded as musician of 1992 at Tochigi early-music festival in Japan (1992).
Since then, Jin Kim has been appearing as a soloist and an ensemble player mainly in Asia and Europe. As a member of La Petite Bande, directed by Sigiswald Kuijken, she has been playing at major early-music festivals in Europe, South America and Asia as well as participating recordings of Bach Cantatas, Passions, and Haydn Symphonies among others.
In Korea, Jin Kim founded Baroque ensemble Musica Glorifica in 2002, and endeavored after recreation of Baroque repertoires with fresh inspiration and spiritual depth. She served as president of Early-music Society of Korea from 2005 to 2008, and worked as a pioneer to promote early music in Korean musical society. She also made efforts to give numerous lectures and concerts in major universities in Korea, and taught in Northwestern University and Roosebelt University in USA.
Her CDs “Psalms for you: 17th century Italian music” and “Handel Violin Sonatas” both released in Japan and Korea, had received high acclaims of early-music reviews.
Jin Kim currently plays a violin made in Absam in 1656 by Jacob Stainer.

In 1985, Kim participated Herbert von Karajan International Conductors Competition in West Berlin and took second prize (without first). It was a first and last North Korean winner of this competition.
After returned his country, Kim joined Mansudae Arts Troupe again as a conductor. He also rehearsed Troupe’s famous Merited Female Instrumental Ensemble and founded Isang Yun Orchestra in 1990.
