Dr. David Yonggi Cho

The Yoido church on Sunday mornings, buses line up coming from all different locations in Seoul, Korea to attend the service. Ushers working out on the sidewalks, directing the traffic and helping the people as far as one half mile away. When you get to the front door of the church, walking through thousands and thousands of people to find a seat is something you really have to experience. No matter how I try to describe it, you will never be able to understand until you have been there.

I lived in Seoul, Korea for a while, I desired to learn. I saw, firsthand the church in Seoul, Korea, experiencing something different than most American churches. I speak this not to anger you, but to stir up your heart for prayer in the USA. I traveled around Korea; each church having a great move of God. People getting saved everyday! Many people say, “That’s because Korea is a third world country.” My friend, Korea, is like being in downtown New York City. Korea is having a great move of God, because they have not forgotten the purpose of the cross. (TO WIN THE LOST)

Second day in Korea, a young Korean woman stopped me to share Jesus, as I was walking out of my hotel. I said, “Yes, I know Jesus!” She went one step further; “Good!” She said, “I will pick you up for church tomorrow.” Sunday morning she came to my hotel, I stepped outside, she was parked in front in her new Mercedes Benz; she was so excited to take me to her church. I had not yet shared with her I was a minister. Later, I found out she was a Home Church Leader; she was working for the Lord the day she met me. She said, “I share everyday about Jesus, many people do not know Jesus. They go to church, but are not filled with Holy Spirit. I learned English so I can speak to Americans about Jesus.” She became a good friend.

Later, I was asked to minister in a new church, ready to labor, I said, “Yes! I would love to minister.” I would need to fly to another side of Korea, to a place called Pusan. The flight took two hours. When we arrived about six pastors met us at the airport. My good friend a faithful servant, Jill came along and my interpreter. We drove awhile, then arriving in front of a 15 story beautiful building. It looked like it was made out of marble. It was Wednesday, just before noon; I figured the church must use one of the floors for service. What a nice building, I thought; to my surprise they asked if I would mind preaching for a small group at noontime. Every Wednesday they had a church service at noon, “No problem,” I said, “I would be honored. “Good!” They said, “Service starts in ten minutes, hurry let’s go.” Talk about being ready in season and out of season! I was taken in through a back stairway, then out on the platform. I tried not to look too surprised, as I looked out and saw almost 5000 people.

God is the God of Korea, as He is the God of America! I believe for a great move of the Holy Spirit. I know it will happen! Prayer was and is the key to this great move of God in Korea. I want to see the Lord move in the USA. It will take a price, a price of prayer. Pastors, Please Pray!

Prayer That Brings Revival by David Yonggi Cho

HR

Prayer That Brings Revival (Charisma House, 1998) is the kind of book that will change you. David Yonggi Cho is the founder and pastor of Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, Korea, the largest church in the world with 750,000 members. The key factor in the church’s growth has been an emphasis upon prayer. One of the greatest lies of Satan is that we don’t have enough time to pray. However, all of us have enough time to sleep, eat, and breathe. As soon as we realize that praying is as important as sleeping, eating, and breathing, we will be amazed at how much more time will be available to us for prayer (p. xix). The church has a prayer center called prayer mountain. There are normally 3 or 4 thousand believers fasting and praying there during the week and ten thousand on weekends.

Cho writes about what has happened to most movements, churches, and most of our individual spiritual highpoints. Once continuous and fervent prayer is forgotten, the impetus of the revival is lost; and all that is left is the momentum of the past (p. xxix).

Pastor Cho writes out of a strong charismatic tradition, yet all Christ’s church should listen carefully to his Spirit-filled insights on the ministry of prayer. Prayer creates a personal change in your life. Nothing you can do will benefit you more than prayer. Through prayer, you create an account balance in your favor in God’s spiritual bank. Through prayer, you will benefit spiritually, mentally, and physically (p. 34).

Pastor Cho develops in chapters 4-6 three types of prayer; ask-petition, seek-devotion, knock-intercession. In the first level, Cho discussed how to increase our faith for asking God for the needs we have. Regarding the next level, he chides us gently. The lazy Christian is not willing to seek. He never enters into the fullness of the blessing God has desired him to enter (p. 57). The third level is a challenge too because, Intercession is the level of prayer where we may become a partaker of Christ’s suffering (p. 59). As you can see, Pastor Cho’s insights are rich, intriguing, and they exhort us to grow in prayer.

Part three (eight chapters) deals with the forms of prayer. In this section of the book he discusses our devotional life, family devotions, the cell meeting, Prayer Mountain, all night prayer meetings, and fasting and prayer. The last chapter is called Waiting on the Lord and contains this gem. Everyone who is willing to wait upon the Lord can be qualified to carry out the great task before them because the source of their strength is not natural but spiritual (P. 113).

Part four (five chapters) covers the methods of praying. Topics include persistence in prayer, praying in the Holy Spirit, the prayer of faith, listing to God’s voice, and the importance of group prayer.

I highly recommend this book. It will inspire and encourage your prayer life. (It was previously published as Prayer: Key to Revival, 1984.)

THE CONTRIBUTION OF DAVID YONGGI CHO TO A CONTEXTUAL THEOLOGY IN KOREA*

Abstract

ABSTRACT

The popular writings of the pastor of the world’s largest congregation, David Yonggi Cho, are analyzed in this article in an attempt to show how his theology must be viewed primarily from within his own Korean context, and not from the perspective of the American ‘prosperity gospel’. Cho has been the subject of criticism from both evangelical and liberal writings, neither of which has done justice to his particular context. The writings of Cho demonstrate that his ‘contextual theology’ is born in the particular situation of Korean suffering and illustrate how he has advocated a ‘Pentecostal theology’ that is standard classical Pentecostal theology throughout the world. In particular, the issue of Cho’s interaction with Korean shamanism is examined in the light of his ‘threefold blessings’ teaching.

Prayer Mountain USA

After the Korean War the South Korean Christians had nothing. Ja-shil Choi the Mother in Law of David Yonggi Cho went to a Mountain in Jori-myeon, Paju to pray for God to send money and to build their church; ‘The Yoido Full Gospel Church’ and 500 women joined her.

They fasted and prayed for 3 months. God sent the money plus One million were saved! They were deeply moved because the women saw God move to the extent that He even protected South Korea from North Korea!

The Yoido Full Gospel Church was Co-Founded by Pastor David Yonggi Cho and his Mother-in-law, Dr. Ja-shil Choi who were both Assemblies of God Pastors.

On May 15, 1958, a worship service was held in the home of Ja-shil Choi. Apart from the two pastors, the only others present were Ja-shil Choi’s one daughter (who later married David Yonggi Cho) and two sons One who is Dr. Kim and his brother now pastor in Seoul, Korea, and one elderly woman, who had come in to escape from the rain.

The Two Pastors began a vigorous campaign of knocking on doors, providing spiritual and humanitarian help to the poor, and praying for the sick. Within months, the church had grown to fifty members, too many to accommodate in Ja-Shil Choi’s living room.

Worship services were accordingly moved to a old Army Tent tent pitched in her backyard. As the church continued to grow over the following months and years, the church outgrew one tent after another.

Most recently as of 2007, The Church membership was: 830,000, with Seven Sunday Services translated into 16 languages. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
