Film Review: Love in Late Autumn (2016) by Lim Kah-wai

Lim Kah-wai’s cooperation with Freddie Wong as producer and co-writer resulted in the latter’s most expensive and most mainstream production, one that truly stands out in the former’s filmography.

On the eve of her wedding anniversary, Hong Kong star actress Wen Menglin decides to fly to Shanghai, in order to surprise her husband, an art dealer, particularly since their busy schedules seem to leave very little time for them to be together lately. However, when she arrives in his flat, and after a rather strange “interaction” with the taxi driver, she is unpleasantly surprised to see another woman there, Cindy, his secretary. Although nothing inappropriate seems to be going on, she cannot get over her feelings of jealousy, and after him denying to go with her to Guilin, Guanxi province, 1,600 km away, where they spent their honeymoon ten years ago, she decides to go on her own. Her driver for the trip is the same one, Han Lei, who turns out to be an aspiring writer. The several days-trip brings a number of situations, as the two of them start to bond. Meanwhile, Wen Menglin’s associates and the press is looking for her, as she was about to shoot a movie, and soon the same happens with her husband.

Lim Kah-wai directs a film that is split in two distinct axes. The first one revolves around the declining relationship of two middle-aged individuals, whose jobs and lack of communication has created a number of issues on their relationship, with the film also exploring how different their past was, through a number of flashbacks. The second part follows the “rules” of the road movie, with Wen Menglin and Han Lei experiencing a number of episodes, as they begin to get to know, and in the process, heal each other.

The most significant issue with the film is that the two axes are rather imbalanced. Although both of them seem to serve as vehicles of promoting Wen Bixia as Wen Menglin, with her looking impressive in the plethora of different dresses she wears throughout the film, the first part suffers from mediocre acting, particularly from Tan Yaowen as Huang Jiahui, and a rather clichéd narrative that eventually lingers towards the melodramatic.

On the other hand, the road trip part is excellent. Headed by a great performance by Zhao Bingrui as Han Lei and an impressive antithetical chemistry with Wen Bixia, this part actually works on a number of levels. The episodical nature is quite entertaining with a number of sequences being particularly funny (the wedding) and others particularly beautiful (the one by the water). And talking about beauty, Zhong Youtian’s cinematography captures the melancholic beauty of the autumnal, bucolic settings with realism and artistry, highlighting the rural China in the most impressive way, with the red, yellow and orange hues dominating the many images. At the same time, the dialogues in this part are rather meaningful, as both characters open up and help each other at the same time, trying to mend their issues that mostly derive from their pasts. At moments, it seems that something more than friendship is in the air, but the script does not explore that part particularly.

“Love in Late Autumn” is an impressively-looking production that would be much better however, if the focus was solely on the road trip part and the overall relationship between “the movie star and the taxi driver”.

Man-choo (2010)

Warning: Spoilers

The prologue opens with a dishevelled and somewhat stunned looking women (later known as Anna Chan), a lost soul wandering in a suburban area of a city (later known to be Seattle). Then, as if suddenly snapped back into her senses, she returns to what must be scene of crime and fumbles around a dead man lying on the floor. Police sirens, then an abrupt cut to the title on a black screen “Late Autumn”.

Seven years later, we see Anna getting a three day pass from prison to attend her mother’s funeral, with a cell phone by which her whereabouts is monitored. Failure to answer and report will constitute prison-breaking, immediately triggering a manhunt (or womanhunt, if you wish). On the bus home to Seattle, she encounters Hoon, a Korean young man who claims to have his wallet stolen and borrows 30 dollars from her to make up for his bus fare. Noticing the reluctance in her compliance, he leaves her his watch for custodianship until he pays her back. The rest of the movie is about the development of a subtle relationship between Anna and Hoon.

The persona of the two protagonists cannot be more polarized. Hoon is flippant, happy-go-lucky but not without charm. This soon all makes sense as it is revealed that his is a male escort (a less flattering term would be gigolo). While phone calls Anna gets are from the prison authorities, Hoon gets his share of phone calls from a friend warning him that one of his favourite client’s husband is furious and coming after him. Anna, serving a sentence for killing (not specified if it is murder or lesser charge) is understandably taciturn and guarding. Hoon seems quite sincere in his attentive and gentle attempt to make friends, but to no avail.

Upon arrival in Seattle, Hoon goes off to meet his client, said wife of the angry husband, makes himself obviously very welcome, receives a handsome fee, and even an invitation to elope. Anna is less fortunate, finding herself almost like a stranger to her family after 7 years of imprisonment. After some agonizing, she decides to spend the time before the funeral in solitude. When Anna and Hoon chance to meet again, each with a day ahead with no clear purpose, it is where the mesmerizing movie really begins. On an impulse, she suggests sex (“Do you want me?”) which does not work out as she has been so emotionally damaged in the last 7 years in prison. In good humour, he suggests taking this “first unsatisfied customer” on a relaxing tour of Seattle.

One situation in movies always fascinates me – how two complete strangers finally click. My top favourite has always been, and still is, “The bridges of Madison County” (1995)(except for Before Sunrise/Sunset, which is beyond being mere “top favourite”). What “Late Autumn” offers is ingenious and, as already mentioned, mesmerizing. The day has gone relaxing enough, despite her taciturn irresponsiveness to his considerate attention. Then at dawn, in a deserted amusement park, something magical happens. At a distance, they see a couple (purportedly Greek, he darkish and she blonde and fair) on an animated exchange. He is trying to end their relationship while she implores him to reconsider. In his customary flippant style, Hoon starts to dub the conversation in amusement, in both voices. The magical moment starts when Anna, quite unexpectedly, picks up the woman’s part. The scene ends with a surreal dance sequence beautifully executed by the distant couple. From this point on, there may not appear to have been any apparent change in the relationship between Anna and Hoon, the audience sense that somewhere, there souls are beginning to find each other.

Two ensuing and equally ingenious scenes cement this development. Anna tells her story – an adolescent infatuation, an unhappy marriage, re-entering into her life of the irresponsible man she adored, jealous husband and physical abuse, and finally killing (legal technicalities omitted) and imprisonment. While Anna and Hoon have been conversing in English (with amply adequate fluency), this self-revelation sequence is in Chinese, with Hoon responding in the only two Chinese words he knows – “good” and “bad”. Despite that fact that these two words are sometimes used incorrectly (almost farcically), one somehow gets the feeling that Hoon understands most of what Anna tells him. Or does it really matter? The other scene is a social gathering after the funeral, ending in a brawl between Hoon and this irresponsible ex-boy friend of Anna, now happily married. The whole scene is a charade and again at times almost farcical – the reason given by Hoon for his physical attack is that this man has used his fork, and didn’t even apologize. The more farcical the scene, the more poignant is the entirely over-blown emotional reaction of both Hoon and Anna, standing up for each other.

I fear this piece is already approaching IMDb’s word limits. There is a lot more to be discovered, enjoyed and appreciated in this movie which is filmed in Seattle, in the city’s usual melancholy rain and mist, but not without a break of sunshine that is particularly significant. Music is put to the best use, as is complete silence. TANG Wei’s superb, nuanced performance won her a dozen well deserved awards. HYUN Bin’s role is not as easy as it appears. To play a flippant gigolo is not difficult but to play one that convincingly capture the audience empathy requires much work, which he delivers almost effortlessly.

Plot [ edit ]

Washington state, US, the present day.[8] Anna (Tang Wei), an immigrant from China, has been in prison for seven years for the manslaughter of her husband (John Woo), who was jealous over her re-meeting her former boyfriend Wang Jing (Jun-seong Kim). Hearing that her mother has died and her brother John has arranged her bail, Anna is given 72 hours parole to visit her family in Seattle. On the coach she meets a young Korean man, Hoon (Hyun Bin), who borrows US$30 towards a ticket, and he gives her his watch as security, promising to pay her back later. Unknown to Anna, Hoon is a gigolo on the run from powerful businessman Steve (James C. Burns), who wants to kill him for having an affair with his Korean wife, Ok-ja (Jeong So-ra). Hoon meets Anna again in Seattle, and the pair spend time together. The next day he turns up at her mother’s funeral, and gets into a fight with Wang at a restaurant afterwards. Anna tells him she has to return to prison on time, but Hoon doesn’t give up so easily.[9]

Late Autumn (1960 film)

1960 Japanese film

Late Autumn (秋日和, Akibiyori , lit. “A Calm Autumn Day”) is a 1960 Japanese drama film directed by Yasujirō Ozu. It stars Setsuko Hara and Yoko Tsukasa as a mother and daughter, and is based on a story by Ton Satomi.

Late Autumn follows the attempts of three older men to help the widow of a late friend to marry off her daughter. The daughter is less than happy at the proposals, mainly because of her reluctance to leave her mother alone. The film was selected as the Japanese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 33rd Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.[1] While not one of the works for which Ozu is most known, Late Autumn is highly regarded by critics.

Plot [ edit ]

Three middle-aged friends and former college mates – Mamiya (Shin Saburi), Taguchi (Nobuo Nakamura) and Hirayama (Ryūji Kita) – meet up for a memorial service on the seventh anniversary of the death of a late college friend, Miwa. Miwa’s widow Akiko (Setsuko Hara) and 24-year-old daughter Ayako (Yoko Tsukasa) are also present. The three friends remark amongst themselves how attractive Akiko has remained even into her forties.

The party chats about their shared opinion that it is time for Ayako to get married. Taguchi tells them he has a prospective suitor for Ayako, but it later turns out the man already has a fiancée. Mamiya instead offers his employee, Goto (Keiji Sada), as another match, but Ayako confides privately in Akiko that she has no wish of getting married. Ayako, who lives alone with Akiko, is close to her mother, who teaches dressmaking.

Ayako meets Goto one day at Mamiya’s office. During a hiking trip, a colleague offers to introduce him to Ayako again. Ayako and Goto begin dating, but Ayako is unwilling to marry as that will mean Akiko will live all alone. Ayako puts forward to Mamiya her theory that “romance and marriage could be separate”. The three friends think that all this is an excuse and begin to speculate that Ayako will marry if Akiko remarries. The other two offer Hirayama, a widower, as Akiko’s prospective remarriage partner. Hirayama warns them not to go ahead with their plan, but after discussing it with his son, changes his mind.

Hirayama now approaches Taguchi and Mamiya for help. Before they can break the subject to Akiko, however, Mamiya tactlessly lets Ayako know about their plan. Thinking that her mother has known about this, an unhappy Ayako goes home to question her and then leaves for her colleague and friend Yuriko’s (Mariko Okada) place in a huff. Yuriko, however, approves of Akiko’s remarriage. She tells Ayako not to be selfish, which gains Ayako’s displeasure.

Displeased, Yuriko confronts the three friends, and finds out the truth from them. Mamiya apologizes for their mishap; however, seeing their cause, Yuriko decides to help Hirayama. When Akiko and Ayako go for their last trip together, Akiko tells her daughter she has decided not to marry. She urges Ayako not to worry about her. With her assurance, Ayako marries Goto, leaving her mother to live alone.

Reception [ edit ]

Late Autumn has a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.[2] In a 1973 review, Nora Sayre of The New York Times praised the performances of Hara and Tsukasa and wrote, “Love is hardly mentioned when the subject of marriage arises. But enormous affection between parents and children, and among old friends, is revealed as it rarely is on screen: often, it’s shown through the small jokes that intimates make at one another’s expense.”[3]

In 2009 the film was ranked at No. 106 on the list of the Greatest Japanese Films of All Time by Japanese film magazine kinema Junpo.[4] In 2010, Peter Bradshaw awarded the work a full five stars, writing that the work is “as tonally ambiguous and morally complex as anything he ever made.”[5] In Time Out, Trevor Johnston wrote that “the film offers as much pure aesthetic pleasure as, say, Wong Kar-Wai, but it’s ultimately on a human level that it’s most affecting. […] Hara’s undemonstrative yet knowing half-smile in the final scene registers the inevitable paradox of loving and losing.”[6] Critic Derek Malcolm lauded it as “a commentary on Japanese mores that [surpasses] nationality and [manages] universal appeal.”[2]

Home media [ edit ]

In 2011, the BFI released a Region 2 Dual Format Edition (Blu-ray + DVD).[7] Included with this release is a standard definition presentation of A Mother Should be Loved.

LOVE IN LATE AUTUMN

The romantic melodrama Love in Late Autumn. In a fit of anger, Movie star Linda jumps on the nearest taxi and impulsively heads for Guilin, which she once visited with her husband Ka Fai. On the long road trip, she begins to develop an affinity with taxi driver Han Lei.

Man-choo (2010)

The film opens with a severely beaten Anna (the always beautiful Wang Tei) desperately struggling to come to terms with what led to the death of an, as of yet, unidentified male. Much of the film operates in this fashion, providing the viewer with enough of a taste to comprehend what may have happened, however, rarely definitively illustrating an exact answer, allowing the audience’s imagination to fill in the blanks. On one hand, this has the unique feel of independent cinema, and allows viewers much freedom, though at the same time, can become frustrating, considering we, the viewers, long for completeness to quench our thirst for knowledge.

Seven years later, in the midst of a prison sentence, Anna is given a three day furlough to visit her mother’s funeral. On the way to Seattle, she bumps into Hoon (Hyun-Bin), who asks her to lend him money for bus fare, and though he promises to pay her back, Anna shows little interest. Ms. Tei convincingly plays a woman who has become disillusioned and pessimistic from her time in prison, while exhibiting melancholy in a city which has changed since she was last there.

By chance, she meets Hoon once more, who offers to take her around Seattle. Hoon is, for lack of a better term, a gigolo, however, his explanation sounds far more advertising, though at the same time, he seems painfully romantic, garnering feelings for some of the women he meets, despite being required to maintain his professionalism.

On the run from the jealous husband of a woman who fell in love with him two years earlier, Hoon is a man whose life has taken a turn for the worse, much like Anna’s, yet continues to maintain optimism and confidence, that attracts her to him. Surrounded by judgemental relatives, Hoon is the one man who accepts Anna for who she is.

The chemistry between the leads is especially great, there being a number of equally dramatic and humorous moments to behold. Moreover, a number of scenes are very memorable, including a moment when Hoon and Anna break into an amusement park, alongside another time when Anna discusses some of her past.

The multiple locations are brilliantly brought to life by the cinematography, which further draws us into the experience, while the use of sound and music is just as effective.

By the conclusion of the film, I was left feeling a little empty, for unlike other features, that serenade us with fantastical plots of everlasting love, director Kim Tae-Yong never tries to force anything. Instead, he creates a feature that feels very genuine, right down to the painful reality that not everything is destined to end happily ever after, despite our wishful thinking.

(Half of the film is in English, while the other half is sub-titled).

Story of ‘Late Autumn’ beyond words

We human beings heavily rely on words. To communicate and interact, to defend and protect, and to love and care.

Yet director Kim Tae-yong’s newly released film, “Late Autumn,” tells a love story of two strangers who do not use a lot of words to share their innermost feelings.

Co-starring Korean actor Hyun Bin and Chinese actress Tang Wei, “Late Autumn” is a remake of Korean director Lee Man-hee’s 1966 film of the same title.

The movie begins as a prisoner Anna (Tang Wei), a Chinese-American woman who had murdered her husband seven years ago, is released from jail for three days to attend her mother’s funeral in Seattle.

In the bus heading to Seattle, Anna runs into Hoon (Hyun Bin), a Korean gigolo. Spending the next 72 hours together ― without sharing a lot of words ― the two begin to develop genuine feelings for each other.

Tang, whose performance touchingly delivers the very essence of tormented Anna, said playing the character was a huge challenge. “Every moment of playing Anna was extremely difficult,” Tang said at a press conference in Seoul on Thursday.

“It was difficult to think about Anna’s life and emotions. Yet as she met Hoon, it felt like getting some sunshine.”

In the movie, English-fluent Anna, who is oppressed by her past and feelings, tells Hoon why she killed her husband in her mother tongue, Chinese. Hoon, who only knows how to say “good” and “bad” in Chinese, acts as if he understands what Anna says, repeatedly replying “hao” (good) and “hwei” (bad).

“This is a love story of two people of different cultural and linguistic background,” actor Hyun Bin said at the conference. “I hope the viewers can see how our characters overcome that barrier and fill in with something else.”

Hyun, who enjoyed enormous popularity for his wealthy CEO role in the highly successful SBS drama series “Secret Garden,” said he finds himself more like Hoon in the film than the character in the SBS drama.

“Joo-won in “Secret Garden” is very straightforward and is never afraid to express his feelings,” Hyun said. “I am not always like that. Like Hoon, I tend to keep my real feelings in and tend to express them indirectly.”

Hyun also showed a lot of attachment to his character, Hoon.

“Though he is bright on the outside, I think Hoon has a lot of sadness and hurtful memories inside,” he said. “While he pleases other people, he gets hurt and finds joy at the same time.”

Director Kim Tae-yong said the movie is about the moment when one opens up to another being.

“I don’t think one must believe that love exists,” he said. “But there are moments when people open up to the other. This movie is all about that.”

“Late Autumn” opens in theaters on Feb. 17.
