1. Seoul National University
The best university in Korea recognized by everyone is Seoul National University! The dream school of every high school student, and also the dream school for students in the popular Korean series “Sky Castle.” In this series, it’s as though the only goal in life is to enter SNU.
But why SNU? Because everyone believes that “attending SNU = success.” And in reality, people who graduated from SNU usually do have a higher socioeconomic status. For example, the first Asian person to be Secretary-General of the UN. He is also from SNU. Being an alumni of SNU can be thought as a road to success.
Plus, the educational system of SNU is one of the best in Korea. The curriculum of each department is well laid out, and the professors are all very talented. Thanks to all this, SNU is the only Korean university in the top 40 of the top universities list (ranked 36th in 2019)!
2. KAIST
Ranked 2nd among Korean universities! In fact, everyone’s opinions on the best university are different after SNU. So this article is based upon the 2019 list which ranks KAIST the second best. KAIST’s full name is Korea Academy of Science and Technology, a school specializing in the development and innovation of science and technology in Korea.
There are many well-known scientific geniuses studying at KAIST. They learn in KAIST to become leaders in scientific innovation and development. If the United States has MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Korea, we have KAIST.
KAIST’s campus is not located in Seoul, but in Daejeon. Although this is no geographical advantage, because of the unique nature of KAIST, each year it attracts a lot of applicants who want to lead the future.
3. POSTECH
No.3 in the list of best universities in South Korea is POSTECH. Having its name focused on technology, it’s similar to KAIST. It’s just that KAIST is more like a place where scientists go to, and POSTECH is more for training technicians and engineers.
A university with the concept of conducting top research in the field of science and technology, it’s a prestigious university that many science and technology students want to go to. POSTECH, located in Pohang, was founded by a well-known local Pohang Steel Manufacturing Company (now POSCO), so graduates from POSTECH are more likely to enter related companies through this link. It’s called YeonKoJeon, which means the Battle between Yonsei and Korea. The two schools compete in football, American football, basketball, baseball, and ice hockey. They also have a cheering competition in really large-scale during the games and even before and after.

Can I get into KAIST or SEOUL National University?
Just because it’s a public school doesn’t mean it’s free. Even if it WAS free, I doubt it would be free for a foreigner.
For Seoul national, the tuition vastly varies depending on one’s major and your year. In case of engineering, it is around 3 million won as of 2017, which is around 2800~2900$.

For the first time ever, the presidents of SNU and KAIST came together to discuss student exchange programs and other ways to improve cooperation between the two schools. SNU and KAIST, traditionally perceived as competitors, agreed that it would be better for both schools to combine their efforts to rise up to global challenges. SNU to Introduce Smart Phone Student ID Cards
Starting this fall, SNU will be the first Korean university to enable cafeteria bills and other on-campus expenses to be paid by using a smart phone student ID card. In order to do this, students must have a smart phone under his or her name, and the account connected to the smart phone ID card should not be empty at the time of payment. SNU explained that unlike card payments, smart phone ID card payments will not entail commission fees, and expressed hope that the school will be able to enhance the quality of cafeteria food with the extra money.

NEW YORK, June 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — South Korea’s Seoul National University, KAIST and POSTECH top Reuters fourth annual ranking of Asia Pacific’s Most Innovative Universities, which list identifies and ranks the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and power new markets and industries.
SNU unseats three-time No. 1, KAIST, which drops to second place. The ranking, compiled by Reuters in partnership with Clarivate Analytics, found that SNU researchers consistently produced a high volume of patents, and their research is frequently cited by scientists throughout Asia and around the world.
Rounding out the rest of the top five schools in Asia are Korea’s POSTECH, which held onto third. China’s Tsinghua University (No. 4, up one), became the highest-ranking school outside of Korea, leapfrogging Japan’s University of Tokyo (No. 5, down three).
Four years ago, China had zero schools in the top 10, and Japan had five; today China has two in the top 10, and Japan has three. Japanese institutions returning to the list in 2019 fell an average of 5.1 places year over year; only six institutions on the list fell by more than 10 places, and four of them were Japanese. Meanwhile, Chinese institutions were up overall, gaining an average of about one spot. Two Chinese schools climbed more than 10 places, and China is home to the only new university on the list, the Beijing University of Posts & Telecommunications (No. 53).
To compile the 2019 ranking of the Asia Pacific region’s most innovative universities, Reuters relied on data compiled by Clarivate Analytics and several of its research platforms: InCites, Web of Science, Derwent Innovations Index, Derwent World Patents Index and Patents Citation Index. Clarivate Analytics identified more than 600 global organizations that published the most articles in academic journals, then reduced that list to only include institutions that filed at least 50 patents with the World Intellectual Property Organization between 2012 and 2017. Then they evaluated each candidate on 10 different metrics.
