Pianist Jun Cho is a versatile artist who enjoys a multidimensional career as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator. He has performed in many of the major venues throughout the United States, South Korea, and Europe.

An avid collaborator, he frequently performs with musicians including Itzhak Perlman, Philippe Quint, Stefan Jackiw, Randall Goosby, JP Jofre, and the members of New York Philharmonic. Additionally, he is a regularly featured pianist of Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet, the latest recipient of the Latin Grammy Award, performing an array of Tango music in some of New York’s popular clubs such as the Iridium and Barbès.

In the past, he appeared in various summer music festivals including Aspen, Sejong, Bowdoin, Music Academy of the West, and served as a piano faculty at the Heifetz Institute. He is currently an artist-faculty member at the Perlman Music Program, and the studio pianist of violinist Itzhak Perlman at the Juilliard School. He is also an assistant to Juilliard’s piano faculty, Julian Martin. Jun’s students and mentees have gained both local and widespread recognition, from winning regional competitions to being admitted to various undergraduate and graduate programs to enjoying an international career.

Jun is also a founding member of New York in Chuncheon, a music festival based in Chuncheon, South Korea. The festival, comprised of various musicians of New York City, such as the members of Brooklyn Rider, Attaca Quartet, and Sybarite 5, produced yearly chamber music concerts since 2012. Furthermore, the festival’s outreach program, which includes masterclasses and various mentorship activities, helps to nurture the city’s aspiring musicians.

Jun received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at The Juilliard School, and doctoral degree from Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. His teachers include Julian Martin, Jon Kimura Parker, and Seymour Bernstein.

An avid collaborator, he frequently performs with musicians including Itzhak Perlman, Philippe Quint, Stefan Jackiw, Randall Goosby, JP Jofre, and the members of New York Philharmonic. Barr Memorial Concert to feature up-and-coming pianist Jun Cho on Oct. 30

The Stephen Barr Memorial Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in Martin Hall, and will feature pianist Jun Cho.

The concert was established more than three decades ago by Patricia Barr ’52 and her late husband, Dr. Howard Barr ’53. It is given every year in memory of their son, Stephen, with the purpose of presenting and promoting a young, up-and-coming artist who has a promising career as a performer.

‌ About the performer

Pianist Jun Cho recently made his debut of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with maestro Larry Rachleff as a result of winning the Shepherd School of Music concerto competition in 2014. He has appeared as both solo and chamber musician at major New York venues including Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall and Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center.

Cho has also performed as concerto soloist with the orchestras of The Juilliard School and The Mannes School. Prior to living in New York, Jun Cho received numerous awards in his native Korea, including first prize at the Korea Times and Samick competitions.

Cho studied with Choong-Mo Kang, and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music degrees at The Juilliard School as a student of Julian Martin. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in the studio of Professor Jon Kimura Parker.

Seong-Jin Cho (Korean: 조성진; born May 28, 1994)[1] is a South Korean pianist. He rose to fame within South Korea and the international classical music world in 2015 after winning the XVII International Chopin Piano Competition, becoming the first South Korean pianist to do so.[2][3]

Early life and education [ edit ]

Cho was born in Seoul, South Korea. He began playing the piano at a young age and gave his first public recital when he was twelve years old.[3] He graduated from Seoul Arts High School.[4] He was taught by Prof. Park Sook-ryeon and Professor Shin Soo-jung and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris as a student of Michel Béroff.[3]

Career [ edit ]

Cho has won numerous awards including First Prize at both the International Fryderyk Chopin Competition for Young Pianists (2008) and the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition (2009). He has also received Third Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (2011) and the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Tel Aviv (2014). In 2015, Cho won First Prize in the XVII International Chopin Piano Competition.

As a soloist, Cho has performed with many major orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Mariinsky Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He also regularly collaborates with eminent conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Myung-Whun Chung, Gustavo Dudamel, Valery Gergiev, Vasily Petrenko, Mikhail Pletnev, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Yuri Temirkanov.[5] In recent years, he has toured countries such as Japan, Germany, France, Russia, Poland, Israel, China and the USA.[6]

An active recitalist, Cho performs in many leading concert halls, including New York’s Carnegie Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Los Angeles’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, Munich’s Prinzregententheater, Wiener Konzerthaus, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall and the Berliner Philharmonie. He has been also been a guest artist at numerous festivals such as the Verbier Festival, Menuhin Festival Gstaad and the Rheingau Musik Festival.[7]

In 2017, Cho gave his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Sir Simon Rattle replacing Lang Lang during parts of the orchestra’s Asia tour. [8]
