WHO ARE THE AMISH PEOPLE OF AMERICA?
One thing I love about the USA is the diversity. You can pretty much find people from all cultures, religions, traditions and walks of life inside of this country of 327 million people.
One of the most interesting groups of people that I’ve come across are the AMISH. They are traditional Christian Anabaptists who originally have Swiss German roots, and settled (mostly) in Pennsylvania in the early 18th Century.
I went to Lancaster Country, PA today to learn all about their way of life, and it’s fascinating! Have you ever heard of the Amish before?

안녕하세요~
오늘은 미국 펜실베니아주에 위치한 사잇 앤 사운드 극장(Sight & Sound Theatres)에서 현재 상영 중인 성극 퀸 에스더를 소개합니다!
사잇 앤 사운드 극장은 펜실베니아주 랭커스터(Lancaster)에 위치한 약 40여 년의 전통을 가지고 있는 극장인데요~
이번 연도에 공연하는 퀸 에스더 뮤지컬은 3월부터 시작해서 이번 달 말까지 공연한다고 합니다!
2020년도에는 아쉽게도.. 코로나로 인해 관객이 무대를 다 채우지는 못하고 한 줄씩 띄어서 앉도록 자리 배치가 되었습니다.
옆 사람과의 거리를 유지할 수 있도록 옆 좌석도 다 몇 칸씩은 띄어서 앉도록 되어있었어요!
티켓은 좌석마다 다르고 주말 주중에 따라 다르지만 저는 두 명에 약 $150불 정도 냈던 거 같습니다 ㅎㅎ
저는 이번이 두 번째 방문이었는데요~
안에 들어가 보니 역시 지난번처럼 스케일이 어마어마하게 잘 꾸며져 있었습니다.
앞에 무대뿐만 아니라 왼쪽과 오른쪽 양 옆 사이드에도 무대가 설치되어있어서 무대가 훨씬 더 커 보였습니다!
매년 다른 주제로 공연을 할 때마다 전체적으로 다 세트를 바꾸는데 정말 멋있습니다 ㅎㅎ
기회가 되면 매년 가보고 싶은 뮤지컬입니다!
주인공인 에스더라는 이름은 페르시아어로 ‘별’이라는 뜻인데요~
이 이름을 라틴어로 번역하면 미국에서도 많이 쓰이고 있는 이름 중 하나인 스텔라(Stella)가 됩니다.
이름의 뜻이 참 이쁘고 에스더라는 인물에 참 잘 어울리는 이름인 것 같다는 생각이 듭니다 ㅎㅎ
그리고 에스더는 성경 구약에 등장하는 여왕으로써 지혜와 “죽으면 죽으리라” (에스더 4장 16절)는 믿음과 각오 하나로
유다 백성들을 위기에서 구출한 멋있는 여성입니다 ㅎㅎ
그녀의 용감하고 굳건한 믿음을 본받고 싶다는 생각을 이번 뮤지컬을 보면서 다시 한번 하게 됩니다.
성경에 나오는 퀸 에스더에 대해서 알고는 있었지만 2시간 반 가량의 에스더 생애의 뮤지컬을 생생하게 보고 나니
가슴 벅찬 감동과 여운이 오래도록 남았는데요~
정말 지루할 틈 없이 시간도 정말 빨리 갔습니다!

기념품으로 사 왔던 퀸 에스더 자석인데요!
사이즈가 컸지만 빛에 따라 반짝반짝 빛나는 디자인이 너무 이뻐서 사 오게 되었습니다 ㅎㅎ
오랜만에 정말 감명 깊고 재미있게 보았었던 퀸 에스더였습니다.
내년에는 어떤 주제로 공연을 할지는 모르겠지만 볼 수 있는 기회가 생겼으면 좋겠네요 ㅎㅎ
아 그리고 원래는 매년 겨울에는 크리스마스 내용의 뮤지컬을 따로 한다고 들었는데요~
이번에는 코로나로 인해서 온라인으로 방송하는 걸로 바뀐 거 같습니다..
티켓은 $15불부터 시작해서 자기가 원하는 만큼 도네이션 하는 식으로 내는 거 같더라고요~
겨울 뮤지컬도 재밌어 보여서 한번 티켓을 구입해볼까 생각 중입니다 ㅎㅎ

랭카스터(Lancaster) 밀레니움 극장(Sight & Sound Theatres)과 아미쉬 마을(Amish Villege)을 다녀 와서
지난 토요일(6월 22일) 오전 8시에 교회를 출발하여 약 3시간 거리인 펜실베니아주 랭카스터에 있는
밀레니움 극장을 다녀왔습니다.

이 극장은 1975년 믿음이 좋은 글렌, 샐리 아이젠만 부부에 의하여 시작되었다고 합니다.
그 당시 부흥집회에서 성경을 중심으로 성극 공연을 했는데 반응이 너무 좋아 수만 명이 공연을 보았고 여기서
모든 돈으로 인근에 3에이커 이상의 땅을 사서 600석 규모의 극장을 세웠고, 더 번창하여
1997년에 지금의 2047석이라는 엄청난 크기의 극장을 세웠다고 합니다.
한 부부의 소박한 믿음과 신앙적 열정이 이렇게 어마어마한 열매를 거두었습니다.
지금도 미국 전역에서 성극 뮤지컬을 보러 오는 사람들이 많아 랭카스터의 관광 명소가 되었습니다.
동현네, 동진네, 프리스카 반주자 가정 그리고 권대성 교우님, 저희 가정 모두 5가정, 10명이 다녀왔습니다.
입장료는 평일은 약 $45 정도 하지만 토요일이라 어른 $64, 청소년 $29 이었습니다.
집에서 아침을 제대로 먹지 못하고(?) 오전 8시에 출발한 상황을 고려하여
김혜진 교우님이 물, 케이크, 떡, 과일을 준비하여
가는 길에 즐겁고 행복하게 아침을 대신했습니다. 예쁜 마음과 섬기는 손길에 감사드립니다.
오전 11시 20분경 약속한 랭카스터 식당에 도착하니, 한프란시스 교우님 가족도 이미 도착하여 10명을 이루었습니다.
점심을 먹고,
아미쉬 마을을 둘러 보았습니다.
(아미쉬는 독일에서 시작된 기독교 일파입니다. 유아세례가 없고, 전문적 성직자가 없으며,
기독교 신앙과 세상의 삶을 철저하게 일치하려 합니다. 무기나 폭력이나 전쟁을 거부합니다. 군대 역시 가지 않습니 다. 문명의 이기를 제한적으로 이용하여 대부분이 자동차를 이용하지 않습니다. 아직도 마차를 타고 다니며, 말이나 소를 이용하여 밭을 갈고 옷도 대부분 집에서 만들어 입습니다. 그 자투리를 이용하여 퀼트를 합니다. 남자들은 농사나 목공 일을 하고, 주부는 살림과 퀼트를 하여 돈을 법니다. 자녀들을 정부의 학교에 보내지 않으며 자체로 교육하는데 대략 중학교 정도 까지만 교육시킵니다. 그 정도면 목공, 농사하고, 살림하고, 신앙생활 하며 세상을 살아가는데 부족하지 않다고 보는 것이죠. 아미쉬 공동체 사람들의 정직성은 국가가 인정 할 정도로 대단합니다.)
랭카스터는 거의 전체가 아미쉬 마을입니다. 상점도 아미쉬 사람들이 만든 가구들이 대부분이고,
특별히 퀼트나 직접 손으로 만든 갖가지 소품들로 볼만합니다.
그들은 신앙생활도 철저하게 지키고 그런 모습을 구경하러 오는 관광객들로 인하여 경제적 문제도 어느 정도 해결(?)하는 것 같아보였습니다. 철저하게 주님을 믿는 사람들에게 하느님께서 일용할 양식도 해결해 주시는 것이죠.
밀레니엄 극장에서 노아(Noah)를 보았습니다.
내용은 성경 창세기에 나오는 이이야기를 충실하게 따르는 편이었습니다.
놀라운 것은 무대 규모와 연출 기법이 대단하다는 것입니다.
실제로 말이나 낙타를 비롯하여 각종 동물들이 무대에 등장합니다. 관객을 노아의 방주 안으로 설정한 장면은 참 감동적었습니다. 오늘 함께한 모든 분들, 특별히 운전으로 수고한 권대성 교우님 김혜진 교우님과 좋은 식당을 예약한 한프란시스-황클라라 교우님께 감사드립니다.
다용도 홀: 2주에 한번드리는 주일예배 예배당, 마을 회의실, 결혼식에는 결혼 식장, 검소하고 조졸한 방이다.

며칠전 포스팅을 했던 메노나이트 사람들에 대해 신기해 하는 분들이 많아서 그들과 같은 생활상을 하고,
같은 신앙관을 가지고 있는 그룹이면서 다른 커뮤니티를 이루고 살아가고고 있는 아미쉬 공동체 사람들에
대해 간단하게 아는데로 소개 할 까 합니다.
제가 사는 곳에서 머지않은 곳에 펜실베니아 랭커스터라는 지역이 있습니다 그곳에 주 터를 잡고 살아가는
아미쉬 공동체 사람들은 메노나이트 공동체 사람들과 문화와 신앙이 같다고 생각해도 다르지 않습니다.
메노나이트 공동체 사람들은 현대문명을 그들의 필요에 따라 선택적으로 받아들이는데 약간은 느슨하다고
할 수 있으나, 아미쉬 공동체 사람들 현대문명을 좀더 강하게 거부 한다고 설명할 수 있습니다 .
기독교 신앙과 세상의 삶을 철저하게 일치하려 하는 삶의 방식을 가지고 있고.
폭력이나 전쟁을 거부하고. 군대 역시 가지 않습니다.

이렇게 벌어들이는 돈으로 생활하는데 충분하다고 느끼면 살아가는 것 같습니다
자녀들을 정부의 학교에 보내지 않으며 자체로 교육하는데 대략 중학교 정도 까지만 교육시켜 목공일이나,
농사를하고, 살림하고, 신앙생활 하며 세상을 살아가는데 부족하지 않다고 보는 것 같습니다.

사람들 이 였는데 메노나이트 사람들의 생활이 성경적 가르침보다 평화롭지 않다는 이유로 일부가
분리되어 자체적으로 만든 커뮤니티가 바로 아미쉬로 알려지고 있으니만큼 아미쉬사람들의 문화와
신앙생활관을 이해 할 수 있을 것입니다.
펜실베니아 랭케스터에는 세계적으로 유명한 뉴욕 브로드웨이에 견줄만한 뮤지컬 극장이 있습니다
년중 내내 성극을 하며 시즌별로 시간대별로 티켓이 다른 가격대이지만 언제나 자리가 부족하여 예매
없이는 볼 수가 없습니다.
성극은 성경속 인물들을 주로 다루는데 성경에 충실하여 성경속 그대로의 무대를 만들려고 시도함을
볼수있고 성극 속에 나오는 동물들 역시 살아있는 실제적인 동물들로 동원하여 말이나 낙타를 비롯하여
각종 동물들이 무대에 등장하고 관객을 실제적 현장으로 흡입하는 흡입력은 잠시도 눈을 뗄 수 없을 정도로
스릴 넘치는,,, 스케일이 어마어마 한 것이 장점입니다.
제가 봤던 경험으로는 관객석 양쪽 벽에 까지 노아의 방주를 만들어 실제로 관객들이 방주에 들어와 있는
착각이 들정도였습니다.
이 뮤지컬 극장을 통해 아미쉬 마을이 널리 알려지는 계기가 되어 지금은 관광지로 연중 많은 관광객이
분비고 있습니다.
이 극장은 1975년 믿음이 좋은 글렌, 샐리 아이젠만 부부에 의하여 시작되었다고 알려지고 있습니다.
그 당시 부흥집회에서 성경을 중심으로 성극 공연을 했는데 반응이 너무 좋아 수만 명이 공연을 보았고
여기서 모아진 전액 돈으로 인근에 3에이커 이상의 땅을 사서 600석 규모의 극장을 세웠고, 자꾸 더 번창하게
되니 1997년에 지금의 2047석이라는 엄청난 크기의 극장을 세웠다고 합니다.
한 부부의 소박한 실천적인 믿음의 열정이 이렇게 어마어마한 열매를 거두었습니다.
지금도 미국 전역뿐 아니라 세계에서 성극 뮤지컬을 보러 오는 사람들이 많아 랭카스터의 관광 명소가 되었고
아미쉬들이 외부로 알려지게 되었으며 또 그들을 이해하는 데 한 몫을 했다고 합니다.
